Herndon is located in Fairfax County west of the Capital Beltway, North of Route 50, South of Route 7, straddling the Dulles Toll Road West of Reston and East of Dulles Airport. Part of the Herndon area is a town (about half of the 20170 Zip code). The northern portion of 20170 outside the town is also known as Herndon. All of Zip code 20171 (located south of the Dulles Toll Road) is a place called Herndon. The southern portion of zip 20171 is also known as Oak Hill. The areas not included in the town of Herndon operate without any local municipal functions rather are governed and serviced by Fairfax County.
